Projeto Guimarães Jazz / Porta-Jazz #4

Very excited to be heading to Guimarães Jazz 2017 for a residency in November, working collaboratively with Portugese musicians, an actress and a playwright. We present the results of our residency on Sunday, 12 November at 21h30! Here’s the project description:

This year`s edition of the partnership between Guimarães Jazz and the association Porta-Jazz is based on the intersection between music and theatre: an old relationship which, although following many different paths, is essential to performative arts.

During a week of artistic residency, playwright Jorge Louraço Figueira will write a text and actress Catarina Lacerda will perform it in collaboration with a quartet led by Nuno Trocado (guitar) and featuring musicians Tom Ward (saxophones, flute, bass clarinet), Sérgio Tavares (bass) and Acácio Salero (drums). The main theme of the residency is the relation between sound and word, confronting both pre-determined as well as improvised contributions in order to collectively conjugate all the individual inputs in a coherent way. The main guideline is jazz – a style of music which, in its purer form, is nothing more than attempt to conjugate different inputs into a musically coherent way.

Madwort Saxophone Quartet @ MJF 2015 (updated)

Two bits of news about the upcoming Madwort Saxophone Quartet gig at Manchester Jazz Festival…

Firstly, it’s apparently sold out, so if you don’t already have a ticket, you’re too late!

Secondly, in very sad news, Chris Williams has fractured a bone in his hand in a freak accident, so the amazing Dee Byrne will be standing in for him on alto saxophone.

A few nice concerts in the coming months:

Sunday Jan 25th – Madwort Sax Quartet @ Jazz at the Salisbury, Green Lanes

This band’s first gig was at Jazz at the Salisbury way back in Sept 2012, I think the acoustic really suits this line-up so it should be a great gig.
